ABOUT
SERENA
Auñón-Chancellor
Dr. Serena Auñón-Chancellor is a NASA Management Astronaut, physician, engineer, and veteran of International Space Station Expeditions 56 and 57. Selected by NASA as a member of the 2009 Astronaut class, she served as a Flight Engineer aboard the International Space Station, logging 197 days in space during her first spaceflight. While living and working aboard the International Space Station, Auñón-Chancellor and her crewmates supported hundreds of scientific investigations in biology, biotechnology, physical science, and Earth science. Her work included research related to cancer-treatment methods, algae growth in microgravity, protein crystallization, and human health. The crew also installed a new Life Sciences Glovebox, a sealed workspace designed to support life-science and technology investigations in space. Before becoming an Astronaut, Auñón-Chancellor built a distinguished career at the intersection of medicine, engineering, and human spaceflight. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from The George Washington University and a Doctor of Medicine from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. She completed her internal medicine residency at The University of Texas Medical Branch, where she later served as Chief Resident. She also completed a residency in aerospace medicine and earned a Master of Public Health. She is board certified in both internal medicine and aerospace medicine. Auñón-Chancellor joined NASA’s Johnson Space Center in 2006 as a Flight Surgeon. She spent more than nine months in Russia supporting medical operations for International Space Station crew members in Star City. She also served as Deputy Crew Surgeon for Space Shuttle mission STS-127 and held a leadership role in Orion Medical Operations. Her NASA Astronaut training included instruction in International Space Station systems, robotics, spacewalk operations, physiological training, T-38 aircraft training, and water and wilderness survival. Following her spaceflight, she continued supporting NASA through medical operations, crew support, and mission communications. Auñón-Chancellor currently serves as a NASA Management Astronaut. She works in the International Space Station Operations branch, where she supports medical issues and on-orbit operations, and serves as a certified Space Station Capsule Communicator, or CAPCOM. As an Astronaut speaker, Serena Auñón-Chancellor brings audiences a rare combination of firsthand spaceflight experience and expertise in medicine, engineering, scientific research, and human performance. Her presentations offer powerful lessons in leadership, teamwork, innovation, decision-making under pressure, international collaboration, STEM/STEAM, and the future of human exploration.
It’s part of our existence, it’s part of who we are to explore.
